  1. Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit 64GB RAM 400GB free SSD disk space HomeManage 2022 (22.0.0.8) The notebook feature that is available on the properties dialog for an asset allows me to track events that happen with a particular asset. For example I track each time that I get the car serviced for maintenance, the mileage on the car and the cost of maintenance. It works well for record keeping. Recently I noticed that for one particular asset (a camera lens), I have made 9 short notes in the notebook, but only the most recent 5 entries show up in the Item Notebook section of the main window pane that displays asset summary information. Is there some way to get all the notes to show up in the list? When only some of the notes show up, it leaves the impression that the list is complete when it actually is not complete. thanks, David
  2. Adding user field Values does not transfer to User Fields on Adding or editing assets. When I delete a user field value it deletes but no other value replaces it, it appears no new values are being allowed.
  3. Recently I made a change in the location where all the attachments are stored to simplify backup of all attachments. This meant that I would need to edit every asset which has an attachment to update the drive letter to point to the new location. This process is highly manual, but was working well until about the 40th or so item when I received an error message upon attempting to open the next asset properties box. The text of the error is "System resource exceeded. (3035) and the OK button is the only option. Clicking the OK button results in another box popping up with the exact same message, then another box, then another and so on with no apparent way around the issue but to kill the program. The dialog box is modal and will not allow any other access to the program until it has been closed. UPDATE: I found that after 15 - 20 error dialog boxes, the properties dialog finally appeared and I could close it, then close the program without killing it! After restarting the app, it worked as expected. Note that the system HomeManage 2020 is running on has 64 GB RAM and 2TB drive storage space on 2 drives, both of which are less than 10% full. I don't know what system resource HM2020 is running out of, and so I don't know how to prevent this issue. A quick look at Task Manager revealed that the AssetMng.exe process (HomeManage) was consuming 1.4 GB as Working Set and 1.3 GB as Active Private Working Set. As it is a 32-bit program, it should be able to access at least 2GB of memory with no problem. So I need help understanding what the problem is and how to correct it.
  4. I'm in the process of transferring my licensed copy of HomeManage2020 from an old laptop to a new one. The steps I completed are: Run HomeManage2020 on the old laptop Deactivate the license from the Tools/Licensing menu. (success. no error notifications) Install the May 2020 downloaded version of HomeManage2020 (20.0.0.10) on the new laptop Run the Check for Updates menu under help on the new laptop (it completed successfully updating to 20.0.0.18) Customize preferences to specify the locations of my database, asset images, and reports Close HM2020. Reopen HM2020. Verify that my database is opened (success) I noticed some problems: The Preferences dialog box is different. In the Preferences dialog, there is no longer the option to change the font size at the bottom of the Preferences tab. The missing option is called Font Size For Lists of Items. There are only 3 panels on the main application screen instead of 4 panels: navigation (panel on the left), the asset list (panel along the top), and the summary information window (panel below the asset list that displays the selected asset's details). The images panel is missing. The only images visible are the thumbnails in the asset list panel above. However, the images were not deleted. If I open the Properties dialog box for an asset, and select the Item Pictures tab, all of the images appear there as expected. The Unused Rooms list and the 2 buttons below it (Add a Room and Delete) are missing, and the Unused Categories list moved from the right side of the dialog box to the left side, taking the space of the Unused Rooms list; the Enable Webcam Features checkbox, which use to be below the Unused Categories list moved up since that listbox is missing. Pictures of these changes would make conveying them much simpler, but the 50K pictures upload limit prevents that. Are these known issues with the 20.0.0.18 update? What is causing these issues and when will they be fixed? Is there anything I need to do to fix them? Thank you David
  5. I have a NAS for which I bought several HDs (hard drives) of exactly the same brand (WD) and model (Red) but different capacities (10 or 12TB), and from three different vendors. I wanted to add the HDs to inventory with the proper product details such as order number, S/N, P/N, model, dealer, warranty, etc. as well as cost details. I created an item with all the this information in the designated fields, then linked the NAS unit as the parent item using the Linked Assets tab of the Item Properties dialog box. Then I duplicated the item several times. The duplicates were smart enough to blank out the S/N field so I could fill it in with the actual serial numbers; but unfortunately it unchecked the Insured and Taxable fields as well -- not the desired outcome. Not a huge problem and easily corrected. As not all of the HD are installed in the NAS (some are spare drives), I didn't want all of them linked to the NAS because that doesn't reflect their true status as spares. So I went to the Linked Assets tab, and in the Parent Asset with this item as a child box, I clicked on the only asset listed there (the NAS) which enabled the previously grayed out Unlink button, which I clicked. The NAS disappeared from the Parent Asset box and I clicked OK. But the Parent Asset still showed up in the summary pane to the left of the Images pane. I figured it might not have updated so I clicked on another asset, then back to the original asset, but the Parent Asset was still present. Then I opened the Item Properties box for the HD and on the Linked Assets tab, the NAS was listed as a Parent Asset, as if I had not unlinked it. I know no way to unlink the asset short of deleting the asset and creating it from scratch, which is a lot more work and which defeats the purpose of using Duplicate. Anyone know a work-around for this problem? Anyone else having trouble using the Duplicate feature? TIA David
  6. Recently I ran the update check to see if there were updates available for HM2020 version 20.0.0.10 and got the Update Error message: Error: Update information for HomeManage 2020 could not be downloaded. Please contact Liberty Street Software for help. See the graphic. What does this mean and how can I resolve it? Thanks, David
  7. I added a couple entries in the item notebook for a monitor that was already in the database. There were already 5 notes in the notebook, thus making a total of 7 notes in the notebook for the monitor: one note on each day of Jan 16, 17, and 18 in 2018, 2 notes on October 24 and 2 notes on October 27 in 2020. I had no problems entering the notes into the notebook. But when I click OK on the notebook entry dialog and view the results on the main panel, only the last note shows. I thought maybe the older notes got deleted somehow, so I went back into the Notes dialog and all three notes are still there, just as I typed them. I've entered notes for other items (for example, for my car each time it is serviced), and not all notes show up on the main panel, but it has never been this extreme. Just now I checked and there are 37 notes for my car, but only 10 notes show up on the main panel. For the monitor I mentioned above, there are 7 notes in the database, but only 1 shows up on the main panel. I have mentioned this problem once before in this forum. Thanks for your attention David
  8. The setting in the subject can be found under the View menu, Customize item. In the dialog box, select the Toolbar tab and near the bottom on the right is a check box labeled Show text labels that enhances the toolbar buttons by placing short text labels beneath the icon. Very helpful for remembering what some of them do. However, this labeling goes away after I close the application. The next time I run it, the labels are not there and the setting has reverted to unchecked. Can this be fixed? TIA David
  9. Following the directions on the install process, I upgraded HM2019 to HM2020 by supplying the same directory information for the 2020 upgrade as I was using for the 2019 version. The application installed into the old program directory with no issues. However the installation process deleted my Assets.mdb data file and all images in my AssetImages folder and replaced both with the stock demo Assets.mdb data file and the accompanying 2 images. This is an outrageous upgrade process! This would have been DISASTROUS has I not had backups of the data file and the images available through Windows 10 recovery. When I pointed the installation to the old program directory, it read the Assets.mdb file to find the location of the Data, AssetImages, and Reports directories, automatically filled them into the appropriate installation fields, then happily deleted everything in those folders with no warning or notification. It's just inconceivable that the installation process would go through the trouble of reading the old Assets.mdb file to determine the old file locations, to then delete all of them!! I also find that no images appear in the main window next to the AssetNum. field like they use to. Dunno what happened to them -- even with the black bars that use to plague those images, they were still helpful in identifying assets quickly by image. Is this a bug? It appears so. In version 2019, the exact same data setup had no issue with the images displaying in the main window. Hoping I don't regret this upgrade, but I'm already headed in that direction. David
  10. Under view by, the columns appear to be using the "By Collection" preferences, but aren't showing the "Stamp Type". Is this something that can be fixed?
  11. I attempted to put the words "Manufacturer's Limited" in the Warranty Type field on the Additional tab of the Item Properties dialog box and received a technical error. See below. I have noticed before that this error also happens when I try to put a single quote in the Description text box of the Add an Attachment dialog box. My guess is the single quote is a string delimiter in internal code and placing a single quote in a text entry confuses the code because of the special meaning of single quotes. The presence of of single quotes as text delimiters in the error message seems to support my theory. Should be easy enough to escape the single quote to fix this if I'm right. Also, if it fails in these two fields, I wonder what other fields and what other special characters (&, [, ], #, *, ", ., ?, etc.) will fail to accept a single quote (special character) in text. UPDATE: Just for giggles I tried adding the text "Manufacturer''s Limited" (note that I used 2 consecutive single quotes between the r and s, not a double quote) in the Warranty Type field and the text was accepted without error. I think this verifies the nature of the single quote issue and points out how to escape it simultaneously. But I found something else odd. After accepting my entry, I opened the dialog box again and in the Warranty Type field there was only one single quote (the desired outcome). After closing the dialog box, I noticed on the lower left display pane on the main form that the Warranty Type field displays "Manufacturer''s Limited" with two single quotes rather than just one. Very odd and not the desired outcome. David
  12. I opened the Preferences dialog box (Tools>Preferences) and went to the Field Names tab to check on some fields I had added some time ago. While there, I noticed something odd. There are duplicate entries for some (many) text fields. The duplicate names are in the "Property" column, not the "Value" column. For example, I found 2 rows each for these fields: User Field 10 (both of these have the exact same entries in the Value field - a value I entered) User Field 11 (one of the duplicate rows has an entry in the Value column that I entered; the other is blank) User Field 12 (one of the duplicate rows has an entry in the Value column that I entered; the other is blank) and User Fields 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 (one of the duplicate rows has an entry in the Value column that I entered; the other is blank) Even odder, there were no duplicate fields for any User Fields higher than User Field 12. I also noticed that all of the duplicate fields except 10 have one Value entry that I entered and the other is blank; see the attached picture for examples. The fields are also not sorted by number -- as you can see in the picture, User Field 2 comes after User Field 19. It looks like they're sorted like text. The sorting is not a critical matter, just an oddity. David
  13. I am using StampManage USA 2018. I collect only Commemorative stamps and I am slowly entering my stamp collection into the program. I've noticed on numerous instances that the stamp image panel in the lower right corner of the StampManage window stops displaying the image of the selected stamp. This seems to happen after maybe 45 to 60 minutes of heavy usage of the Add Stamp(s) dialog and viewing my collection with a few Properties edits mixed in. I have to close the program and then re-open to restore normal image viewing. It's really annoying when I'm concentrating on getting my stamps input correctly? I have not noticed any specific sequence of events that cause this to happen.
  14. After paying for and installing an upgrade to 2018 from 2014, I can not use the application without changing Windows settings to dollars or euros, but my system is in Norwegian kroner (kr) and is the one I use. I've tried to change a lot of settings to make it work, but it's not possible. As soon as I do not have default settings for dollars or euros, I get the "Please enter a currency" error message. The error message appers as soon as I try to edit an item or save a new one. For example the amount 100 appears as "k100,,00" instead of "kr 100,00". I'd like the amounts to appear without any kind of currency and without being ruled by my windows settings. Is there a way to disable this currency function? ?
  15. I went to check HomeManage 2018 for updates by using the menuitem under the Help menu "Check for Updates...". When I clicked, nothing happened. The normal application that runs to check for updates did not appear on screen, and there was no error message or dialog box -- absolutely nothing happened. Ultimately I checked the home folder for the application and found what appears to be an outdated application called CheckForUpdate_HM2017.exe. I wondered how that happened, but figured it may be because I installed the 2018 version on top of the 2017 version. So I renamed the .exe to .exe_SAVE and the associated .dat file to .dat_SAVE and reinstalled the application. After reinstallation, I found CheckForUpdate_HM2017.exe and CheckForUpdate_HM2017.dat in the home folder. I launched CheckForUpdate_HM2017.exe and it as expected. I clicked through the NEXT buttons to check for an update, and it reported that "You already have the most recent version of HomeManage 2017 installed on your system." Is it checking for version 2017 or version 2018? David
  16. I've created 2 user-defined date fields to capture shipped date and received date in HM 2017. When adding an asset I attempted to put a two-digit day in the day part of the field and when pressing the second digit of the day, the cursor advances to the next field (year) and places the number I typed in the year field. The same phenomenon happens when I try to use a two-digit month -- the second digit of the month gets placed in the day field. Is this a bug or something about the configuration I have created? TIA David
  17. When I clicked the properties of the House location, a dialog with tabs General, Attachments, Item Picture(s) and Notebook appeared. My goal was to add some lawn maintenance that I had done recently to the Notebook. That task worked well, but I decided to add images of the house -- didn't realize that I could. Adding the images to House worked as expected. I then went to add images of the shed behind the house to a location I created called Shed. I added 3 images in the order they appear in the app, 1, 2, 3. The first two images worked as expected and the images appeared in the dialog as expected -- no surprises. However, the third image appeared rotated 90 degree CC, even though I took the image on an iPhone in portrait mode (all the images of the shed were taken in portrait mode). I then clicked the Edit button thinking the app may allow me to rotate the image, but nothing happened. So while viewing the 1 rotated image, I pressed the Clear button to clear it so I could try re-adding the image. Re-adding the image worked (I used drag and drop to add all images) but the image appeared with the same rotation problem. I cleared the image. When the image addition failed, by habit I clicked on image 2 and image 1 just to check them. They both appeared to be missing (blank all white panel) -- a surprise since I only intended to clear the one image. So the issues so far are: 1) the app rotated an image improperly 2) the app appears to have cleared all images for the location when I only intended to clear the one mis-rotated image 3) the Edit button did nothing I then went back to the House location properties to check the images there. They all appeared to be correct with no rotation problems, even though of the four images of the house I took, 2 were in portrait mode and 2 were in landscape mode. I selected one of the images, then clicked the Edit button just as a test to see if it would fail again. The Edit button opened MS Paint! Without editing anything, I closed Paint and went back to the Shed to attempt adding all the images again. There were still no images showing on the shed, so I used drag-n-drop to put the same images in the same placeholders. Although there were no errors triggered, and the drag-n-drop operation appeared to work as normal, no images showed up in the locations. The Edit button was grayed out. I went back to the House location to view the images there, and the last image (image 4) was missing, and the other three appeared all black -- completely black with no shades of any color. I clicked on Edit and the actual image appeared in Paint. Without editing the image I closed Paint and the House properties dialog box. As I'm trying to figure out what's happening here, I went back to the Shed and House locations a few times just to check what was visible. Ultimately, all the house images seem to have disappeared even though I never edited any of them, and I never clicked the Clear button (no need to -- all 4 images were perfect). Since I know where the application stores the images, I went to that location in Explorer. All 4 images of the house were present with names like Location184(1).jpg, Location184(2).jpg, etc. None of the pictures of the Shed location were present. Note that all the image manipulation buttons are active in the House properties dialog box, which makes sense since the images all exist; you just can't see them in the pplication image boxes. However, all of the same buttons are grayed out for the Shed location, which also makes sense since the images no longer exist. What doesn't make sense is not being able to re-add the images to the Shed location. 4) So even though the shed images were not present, the application would not let me add images of the shed 5) Even though the images of the house are still present, the application doesn't show them in the properties dialog box for the House location There appears to be plenty wrong with the way the application manages images. I can't figure it out. All images added in this exercise were in JPG format from an 8MP iPhone camera. - David
  18. Occasionally when adding assets to the database, I use a low quality image with the asset just to complete the process of adding the asset to the database. Later I may find a higher quality image that i would like to replace the lower quality image. Sometimes the application will not let me delete this image, if it is the first image for the asset. I haven't seen an issue deleting second, third, fourth, etc. images, just the first one. And the issue is sporadic, so it doesn't always happen. My work around is usually one of two methods: manually delete the image file from the image folder, then add the high-quality image to the asset through the app interface manually delete the image file and rename the high-quality image file using the old image's filename (the app is closed while doing this)
  19. I've noticed that often the thumbnail images of assets in the asset list pane (top pane on the right) will have black bars added above and below the thumbnail image, though the image that I supplied to the application does not contain those black bars. These black bars never overlay the thumbnail, but they obscure the image so much that sometimes its difficult to tell what the image is. Note that I have noticed black bars on the left and right sides of thumbnail images as well, though the original images had no such bars. The combination together makes for a screen of thumbnails that are hard to discern. Also, the thumbnails are very tiny on my 4K monitor, but that's another matter (feature request: allow specifying the size of the thumbnails in Preferences, or auto-size them using monitor DPI).
  20. I use several user-defined fields to track information about my assets. Of them, I use 6 text fields to allow me a choice for unique field names per asset. For example, I have created the following user-defined text fields: User Field 20 is labeled "Field 1 Name" User Field 21 is labeled "Field 1 Value" User Field 22 is labeled "Field 2 Name" User Field 23 is labeled "Field 2 Value" User Field 24 is labeled "Field 3 Name" User Field 25 is labeled "Field 3 Value" When creating a new asset, fields 20 - 24 above show up in the "Custom Fields" tab (which I renamed from "User Fields") of the Item Properties dialog box, but field 25 does NOT show up. This appears to be a bug. Can you verify or point out what I'm doing that's causing the issue? TIA David From the screenshot above, you can see that "Field 3 Value" is missing from the input dialog box.
  21. If you have a Year with a single quote mark in it, like "1800's", then when you select that Year on the View tab you get an error like Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression '[Assets].[YearMade] = '1800's' AND [Assets].[LocationID] <> 3 AND ... Similarly, you get an error if a Color has a single quote. I did not test all of the views, but you don't get this error if a Manufacturer has a single quote in the name. I suspect that this error will occur for all of the views which don't use a database record to store the property, such as Warranty Expiration, Expiring Leases, Color, Year, and Made Of.
  22. This bug is repeatable. 1. Show the Category tab or View tab in the main screen. Do not select any Category or View. 2. Select Tools, Preferences from the menu. 3. Select the Columns tab. 4. HomeManage crashes. 5. I did not test all of the Views, but the program also crashes when some views are selected. E.g. Vehicles. So that the user can edit the columns for the current view, HomeManage tries to select the currently displayed view in the Categories (of which "Showing a Category" is one of the values) dropdown on the Columns tab of the Preferences dialog. I think there is a bug in the Preferences when it tries to determine which view is active and no Category is selected. RELATED ISSUES / SUGGESTIONS Suggestion 1: There are 8 views in the Categories: dropdown. If the user selects a view other than one of the 8 (e.g. Status, Purchases, Groups, Warranty Expiration) then the Categories: is blank. Although it is possible to edit the columns from this dialog, the scheme isn't named and so it isn't possible to edit it without opening the preferences dialog while the view is being shown on the main screen. This makes it difficult to edit several views or to compare views. For example, if I wanted to replace AssetNum with HomeManageID on all my views, I couldn't do it by just opening the Columns preferences and using the drop down to iterate through the views. My suggestion is that every view should be named and be accessible via the Categories: drop down. Suggestion 2: I suggest that "View:" (singular) might be a better name than "Categories:" for the dropdown on the Columns preferences tab.
  23. Procedure to duplicate the error: 1. Create a beneficiary named John Doe by entering John Doe as the Beneficiary in an asset. 2. Create a beneficiary named Jane Doe by entering Jane Doe as the Beneficiary in an asset. 3. Go to the View tab, expand Beneficiaries, click on Jane Doe, and then edit the properties of Jane Doe. 4. Change Jane to John and save the record. The system does not prevent a duplicate beneficiary.
  24. Although you can create a Beneficiary with just a single name (which the system assumes is a last name), when you subsequently edit the Beneficiary properties you can't save it with just a First or Last name. For example, if you created a beneficiary by typing "John" into the Beneficiary field of an asset, the system creates a Beneficiary with a Last Name "John". If you then go to the View tab and try to edit the properties of this Beneficiary, the OK button won't enable until there is both a First and Last name. Because of this restriction you can't move "John" from the Last Name to the First Name field.
  25. If you Search for Text using the Find dialog and sort the Items Found by AssetNum the resulting list of items is not sorted correctly. There are two cases. Case 1. If you set the sort to AssetNum before you start the search, then sort order of the Items Found is about 80% in order. Here is an example of the AssetNum order resulting from a search of my data: 4 12 53 50 135 150 142 177 180 174 186 198 244 246 254 289 298 302 317 335 348 331 342 346 407 402 403 405 Case 2. If the initial sort is something else, like Description, then when you press AssetNum to sort by AssetNum the resulting list is reversed. For this example the resulting order is descending Description.
