how to install the software on my new laptop before I upgrade to new version

I have a new laptop and want to get the Home Manage software and all my household inventory moved over from my old laptop to the new one before I upgrade to the new version.  Or should I do it in the other order (upgrade on my old laptop and then somehow move it over)?  I'm stuck on how to redownload and still keep all my data.
