Adding Die Varieties

I note that you include many of the VAM die varieties for Morgans.  I collect older 18th and 19th century US coins and would like to add those die varieties to my database.  I am comfortable with the process for adding new varieties.  My question is what happens when a new update or release comes out.  Will I lose the variety slots I have created?  If so, is there a way to avoid it (like taking a backup, updating program, and then restoring)?  Also is there any particular field (like PCGS Index No) to be sure is included to potentially avoid problems?
